You gain hiking experience when traveling between locations without a mount. You receive hiking experience equal to half the total travel time.
While hiking without a mount you have a small chance of finding the following drops.

Mounts
Mounts may be purchased to and ridden to reduce travel time. You obtain no experience and no drops while riding a mount. Mounts have a small chance of dying while riding one and moving between locations.
